Couple Therapy

If a three-day intensive retreat doesn’t meet your current needs because of family obligations, scheduling, or financial concerns - and you live within driving distance of our office - you have the option to attend couple counselling sessions, typically bi-weekly, with one therapist.

Marriage & Couples Counselling with David Rubinstein, M.A., RP

Having worked with couples for close to 20 years, I am convinced that a safe and secure relationship is the foundation for a full and happy life. It provides us with the energy we need to meet everyday challenges, whether they involve parenting, resolving family issues, negotiating workplace conflicts, or navigating in the community at large.

My work is focused on helping couples develop safe, secure-functioning relationships by knowing who they are, where they have come from, and how their early attachment histories impact their adult life. The more couples understand each other, and the clearer they are about how they react to each other, the faster they can repair moments of disconnect.

As a couple therapist, I have been inspired more recently by the work of Dr. Stan Tatkin, PsyD, MFT, who has developed A Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy® (PACT). As a Level 11 PACT Therapist, I have found that this approach provides my clients with concrete skills and insights to move forward as a couple.

PACT integrates attachment theory (how early childhood relationships impact present experiences), arousal regulation (the ability to regulate our emotions), and developmental neuroscience (how the brain impacts our behaviour). It is guided by the principle of secure-functioning relationships — relationships that thrive on mutuality, fairness, justice, and win-win for both partners.

Who typically attends Couple Therapy sessions?

Many people think of couple therapy as a last resort. Couples seek help when they are struggling with:

  • persistent conflicts and power struggles
  • lack of meaningful communication
  • distancing and disconnection
  • loss of passion and sexual intimacy
  • infidelity and issues of trust
  • differing parenting styles
  • integrating blended families

Whatever brings you to couple therapy, you will find this counseling experience to be insightful, helpful, and hopeful. My goal as your therapist will be to bring out the best in both of you so that you can feel safe and secure as both partners and friends.

I am interactive and collaborative with my clients, and I bring warmth, humour, and a sensitive listening ear to each counseling session.
